The Problem

Before you spend thousands on water treatment, get a second opinion from someone who has nothing to sell.

Water treatment dealers are in the business of selling systems. A $6,000 quote for a whole-house softener, iron filter, and reverse osmosis unit may be exactly right — or it may be a system your water doesn't need, sized for a house twice your size.

Most homeowners have no way to tell the difference. The dealer shows you a water test (often conducted with their own kit), explains that your water has hardness or iron or chlorine, and presents a solution that happens to cost several thousand dollars. The fear of getting it wrong — of damaging appliances, of drinking something harmful — makes it easy to sign.

Clearstance gives you what the dealer cannot: an independent expert who reads the same water data, evaluates the same quote, and tells you plainly whether the proposed solution matches your actual situation.

"The advisor told me the quoted system was three times larger than my well water required. I saved over $4,000."

The Process

How a Clearstance Review Works

A Clearstance review follows a structured, advisor-led workflow. Every case is evaluated by a human expert. No automated recommendations reach you without advisor sign-off.

01 Intake Day 1

Submit Your Water Test and Quote

You upload your existing water test results and the dealer's written proposal through our secure intake form. If you don't have a certified lab test, we'll tell you what to get and where. Our intake captures your water source, household size, existing plumbing, and any health concerns.

  • Water test results (certified lab or dealer-provided)
  • Dealer's written proposal or estimate
  • Brief intake questionnaire (15–20 minutes)
02 Analysis Days 1–2

Advisor Reviews All Materials Independently

A certified water quality advisor — not AI, not an algorithm — reads your water test against established benchmarks (EPA, NSF, state guidelines), evaluates the proposed equipment for type, sizing, and brand, and assesses whether the system actually addresses the contaminants present in your water at the concentrations found.

  • Contaminant review vs. EPA/NSF/state benchmarks
  • Equipment sizing and specification analysis
  • Dealer proposal cross-check and comparables
03 Evidence Grade Day 2

Advisor Assigns an Evidence Grade

Your case receives a formal evidence grade — GREEN, YELLOW, or RED — based on the completeness and quality of the available data. Only the human advisor assigns this grade. It determines whether we can give a confident recommendation with the evidence at hand, or whether additional testing or specialist involvement is warranted.

  • GREEN: sufficient evidence for a confident strategy
  • YELLOW: additional testing or material required
  • RED: requires on-site, specialist, or local evaluation
04 Delivery Day 3

Written Report Delivered — Advisor-Approved

You receive a plain-language written report explaining what your water test shows, whether the quoted solution matches your needs, and — if appropriate — what a reasonable treatment strategy would look like. Every report is reviewed and approved by the advisor before it reaches you. No automated treatment recommendation ever goes out without sign-off.

  • Plain-language findings and interpretation
  • Dealer proposal evaluation (appropriate / oversized / unnecessary)
  • Treatment strategy guidance (evidence-permitting)

Scope of Review

What We Examine

A Clearstance review covers every material element of your water situation and the dealer's proposed solution. Below is the complete scope — the same checklist your advisor works through on every case.

Water Source

  • Municipal supply vs. private well identification
  • Source-specific contaminant baseline
  • Seasonal variability considerations
  • Regulatory vs. advisory limits

Lab Test Quality

  • Certified lab vs. dealer kit — methodology review
  • Panel completeness for proposed treatment
  • Chain-of-custody and collection standards
  • Missing parameters that affect recommendation

Contaminant Analysis

  • Hardness, iron, manganese, pH, TDS
  • Disinfection byproducts (chlorine, chloramines, THMs)
  • Nitrates, nitrites — especially for wells
  • Heavy metals: lead, arsenic, copper
  • Bacterial and coliform presence
  • Emerging contaminants (PFAS, VOCs where tested)

Equipment Assessment

  • System type appropriateness for identified contaminants
  • Sizing for household flow rate and daily demand
  • Single vs. multi-stage — is each stage justified?
  • Brand and specification comparables at market
  • NSF/ANSI certification for claimed performance

Proposal Review

  • Line-item price reasonableness
  • Installation scope and exclusions
  • Warranty terms and service obligations
  • Ongoing consumable and maintenance costs
  • Financing terms, if present

Report Output

  • Evidence grade: GREEN / YELLOW / RED
  • Plain-language contaminant findings
  • Proposal verdict: appropriate / oversized / unnecessary
  • Treatment strategy guidance (evidence-permitting)
  • Follow-up recommendations if RED or YELLOW

"The dealer's test showed 'high iron.' Our advisor found the actual measured level was 0.23 mg/L — just above the aesthetic threshold. The proposed $7,800 iron filter system was unnecessary. We declined."

— Clearstance client, well water, suburban Maryland

Evidence Grading

Every report carries an evidence grade, set only by the human advisor.

The grade tells you how confident we can be in the recommendation, based on the completeness and quality of the data provided. It is the most honest thing we can offer.

Green

Evidence is sufficient for a confident treatment strategy. Your water data is complete, the parameters are clear, and the appropriate response is well-defined.

Yellow

Additional testing or material evidence is needed before a confident recommendation can be made. We tell you exactly what to get and why.

Red

The issue requires on-site evaluation, specialist assessment, or local authority involvement that remote review cannot substitute. We explain why and what resources to seek.

A YELLOW or RED outcome is still a valid, paid consultation. Honest answers about what we can and cannot determine remotely is part of the service.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Common questions about our review process, scope, evidence grades, and how we work.

Do I need to have a water test before I contact you?
Not necessarily. If you have an existing test — from a dealer, a municipal report, or a certified lab — we work with that. If you don't have a certified lab test, we'll tell you what panel to order and which accredited laboratories serve your area, at no additional charge. We do need at minimum a water test to issue a GREEN evidence grade; without one, the case will grade YELLOW or RED.
What if I don't have a written dealer quote yet?
We can still review your water test and provide an assessment of your water quality situation, appropriate treatment categories, and sizing guidance — even without a specific proposal. If you have a quote from a dealer, we'll evaluate it directly. Both are included in the same $179 fee.
Can you recommend a specific brand or product?
We can describe the appropriate type and specification of treatment equipment your water situation calls for — and provide comparables at market — but we do not maintain partnerships with equipment manufacturers or dealers, and we will not refer you to a specific vendor for compensation. Our interest is in your knowing what to look for, not in directing you to a particular product or seller.
What does a YELLOW or RED evidence grade mean for me?
A YELLOW grade means the available data is insufficient for a confident recommendation — for example, if only a dealer's kit test is available, or if critical parameters weren't tested. A RED grade means the situation requires on-site assessment, a specialist, or local authority (such as a public health department or licensed well contractor) that remote review cannot substitute. Both are valid, paid consultations. You receive a full written report explaining what we found, what is uncertain, and what to do next.
Is my water data and the dealer's information kept confidential?
Yes. Your intake information, water test results, and dealer proposal are used solely to prepare your review. We do not share, sell, or disclose your information to dealers, equipment manufacturers, or any third party.
How is this different from asking the health department or an extension office?
State health departments and cooperative extension offices can provide general guidance and referrals, but they typically do not evaluate specific dealer proposals or provide written advisory reports for individual homeowners. Clearstance provides a focused, written, case-specific review of your exact water data and the exact quote in front of you — that is the service they cannot replicate.
What if the review confirms the dealer's recommendation is appropriate?
Then you have an independent confirmation from an advisor with no financial stake in the outcome. That is worth knowing. You move forward with confidence, not doubt. Many of our clients report that even a confirming review was valuable — the peace of mind about a multi-thousand-dollar decision has clear value.
Do you serve all water sources — wells, municipal, cisterns?
Yes. We review private well water, municipal supply, and other sources. Well water cases often involve more variables (and more aggressive sales tactics), so we see a higher proportion of well-water reviews — but municipal water with treatment proposals (for chlorination byproducts, lead, PFAS, or softening) is well within our scope.
